If you like a little spice with your chocolate, you’ll love this hot chocolate, which earned a 2021 Silver Award from the International Chocolate Salon. Made with 70% dark chocolate, it features a flavorful blend of cinnamon and 3 different chili peppers: ancho, cayenne, and chimayo. My journalism skills came in handy for tracking down authentic chimayo pepper—a (disconnected) phone number someone had written on a scrap of paper ultimately led me to a small family farm that grows this prized New Mexican pepper. For an added treat, stir your spicy hot chocolate with a chocolate spoon.

The cherry is surrounded by a creamy dark chocolate ganache flavored with the balsamic vinegar as well as a French fruit purée of blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, and blackcurrant.

Blackcurrants, also known as cassis berries, are loaded with antioxidants, vitamins A, B, and C, and other good things like potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, zinc, and calcium. But never mind all that—they just taste great!

The Mayans and Aztecs were among the first to discover the pleasure of chocolate. They crushed cacao beans to create a drink often mixed with chile peppers and other spices. These milk chocolate bonbons, infused with an organic Spiced Mexican Rooibos tea, celebrate that early history. The tea itself is flavored with Mexican pasilla and ancho chiles, cocoa beans, cinnamon, and saffron, creating a softly spiced, deliciously creamy chocolate.
The Aztecs believed that cacao was a gift from Quetzalcoatl, the god of wisdom. They considered it an aphrodisiac and mood enhancer with mystical powers. Who am I to disagree?
